How I learnt to serve.

When I moved churches this year I truly understood the meaning of servanthood and its importance. It was another thing I believe God wanted me to learn and it’s actually been an enjoyable experience!
In a world that can encourage personal ambition and pride, our first port of call is not to jump to serving; putting someone else’s needs or a need in front of ourselves. We live to compete and succeed and we want to be first in everything! We want to be boss and we crave recognition as humans. But it’s funny because I believe that God’s will is found in the most unlikely of places, and I think one of those places is servanthood.

STEP 4: BE A PERSON WILLING TO SERVE

Serving is not easy because it means bringing yourself to a level of humility which requires not looking to the opinions and applause of man. Philippians 2:3-8 coins the concept of servanthood well in saying “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

I’ve seen how greatly the Christian ministry is exemplified through serving but I’ve learnt how effective it only is when done out of a non-grumbling and genuine sacrificial heart. Jesus Christ is the true example of servanthood; “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6-7).

I believe that living is giving otherwise all else if selfishness and boredom. Sounds a bit harsh but otherwise how do we build God’s kingdom? I believe to serve each other horizontally that we may glorify God vertically. This year I believe has given me the most opportunity for transformation regarding serving. As I mentioned, moving churches gave me this opportunity because there were more ministries for me to get involved in. I’ve experienced and see how serving can be effective in leading others to Jesus because of how Christ is shown through actions rather than words.

Sometimes giving someone time to talk and be listened to or even just sitting with them are some of the greatest ways that we can honour God by serving and it’s not always in the big things. Being sensitive to his spirit can show us ow we can best serve others through the physical gifts and talents he’s given us. Personally, learn to serve has greatly humbled me and given me a deeper understanding of what Jesus embodies. The beautiful thing about Christ is His leading by example and how he shows the true life of servanthood; putting others before oneself. I’ve experienced how life becomes much more meaningful and purposeful if we are willing to give our whole selves to the service of the Lord without looking back.
